About
Skylar Warren (b. 2003, Reno, NV) is a composer, hornist, improviser, and educator. He is a leader in his communities, and an avid new music advocate dedicated to creating collaborative and inclusive spaces for musicians to work together. He is currently the Vice-President of the 28/78 New Music Collective, and a conductor and artistic director for the Pacific Repertoire Orchestra, both based in Stockton, CA. Additionally, he is also a brother and music director of the Phi Mu Alpha ΦMA music fraternity Beta Pi chapter.
Mr. Warren is currently completing his degrees in B.M. in Music Composition and B.M. in Music Performance at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA with Professor Sadie Glass, and Dr. Andrew Conklin. He has played horn for 10 years with various high achieving ensembles such as the San Francisco Youth Symphony, the Pacific Arts Woodwind Quintet, and the YES Company, where he performed Rodgers and Hammerstein’s ‘Oklahoma!’. He attended the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute (2022) and the Kendall Betts Horn Camp (2023) and the Cortona Sessions for New Music in Ede, Netherlands (2024) on scholarship.
Warren’s music explores the full range of sound, pushing the boundaries in how we can think of timbre and color. He has written numerous works for orchestra, wind band, and chamber ensembles, many of which have received awards. His piece, Refraction (2023) for Horn Sextet was named honorable mention at the Northwest Horn Symposium composition contest (large ensemble category) in Ellensburg, WA. Another chamber piece, Amethyst (2023) for Brass Trio was selected to be performed at the College Music Society 2024 Southwest Chapter conference. In July of 2023, he was commissioned by Sean M. Slatter to write Lost in the Wind (2023) for Alphorn Sextet.
